On Monday evening, March 30, 2014 I was denied a Winn Dixie discount card because I would not give Kelly - the person at Customer Service - because I would not give her my driver's license. When I asked her why she needed my driver's license, she couldn't explain why. I told her if she couldn't explain why she needed my driver's license in order to get a Winn Dixie discount card, then I wasn't comfortable sharing that information with her.

In a day and age when data breaches at major retailers are common, I don't know about you, but, I'm not comfortable sharing more information that is absolutely necessary. For a discount card, to collect all the information contained on my driver's license without any ability to explain why, is simply too much disclosure on my part.

Furthermore, I don't know what Winn Dixie will do with the information collected without an explanation of their privacy policy.

In order to make a long story shorter, she started asking me questions and entering information into a system without further explanation. When she got to my middle initial, I said that she didn't need my middle initial. Kelly's response was that she wasn't going to give me a discount card without me giving her my middle initial. Again, too much information, over collection, no explanation as to why, etc., etc., etc.

At that point, I walked out, leaving groceries half run up on the belt and her standing dumb struck at the customer service counter. She wasn't going to give me a discount card, and I wasn't going to give her my middle initial. A customer service stand off and failure.

What happened to accommodating the customer? Winn Dixie replaced my "go to" store Sweet Bay at the corner of Bee Ridge and Macintosh in Sarasota Florida. But after this experience, I'll be shopping at Publix down the street.

The deals at Publix on Bee Ridge at Beneva in Sarasota Florida are just as good, I don't need a discount card to get them, and the checkout clerks are very helpful, even offering me coupons at the while checking out if I don't have any with me for products on sale that week.

Now, in my humble opinion, that's customer service at Publix. Kelly at the new Winn Dixie location at the intersection of Bee Ridge and Macintosh in Sarasota Florida should take lessons from Publix. Maybe she should shadow a Publix clerk for a while before going back to work at Winn Dixie.

This is a lesson in failed customer service when a Sarasota FL Winn Dixie Employee denies a customer a discount card.

Location: Sarasota, Florida

Scanning the id simply populates the 5 screens of info they require to set up the discount card. This saves the customer and the worker a lot of time vs manually entering your name address etc. And the privacy policy which is the first screen states they will not sell your info

You said its being converted from a sweetbay.

Instead of being angry with her and putting this girl on blast.

Be angry with her coporate office for not properly training her.

She's not even supposed to be signing you up.

She's supposed to hand you the card and have you do it yourself.

At that time you read a privacy statement. I blame poor training.

They want your id so they can scan your info and sell it.I usally give fake info and a fake name when I get these cards and I always say I forgot my I.D.If you love junk mail and phone calls give them your real info.

I agree with Mike Brady on this one. Did it ever occur to you that they need to see a photo ID?

I would be willing to bet that this is corporate policy and the basic employees don't know the actual reason why they have to ask for it and what in God's name would be wrong with them having your middle initial. At the medical clinic that I go to there are two others with the same name as mine and they also have the same middle initial, so for identity purposes they ask for date of birth and last four number of the SS. number.

The pharmacy that I go to has one other person with the same name as mine along with the same middle initial.

information brokers collect info about you this is how it works, never trust strangers just because they have a job does not make the trust person. as with ss numbers the last is the serial number. that is the most important they have a list of the first 3 second 2 and the years these numbers are used birthday also target's that full identity and collected info

I'm with you on this one...giving out all our information just enables others to steal your identity and then you really are in a jam for a long time trying to unravel it all.

Blaming the poor worker. Nice.

Do you think she sets the policies? No, you are one of those who has to make a big fuss. Just let people do their job. If you don't want to give your info, fine.

Just politely decline and walk away. But that wouldn't be as much fun as the drama would it?
